Innovative Building Materials and Systems: waterproof concrete as the best solution for sealing structures In order to create water impermeable concrete, the typical formula for concrete had to be adapted and changed, whereby by reduction of the water cement ratio took into account the effects on its workability. Previous difficulties with altered formulas and cost restrictions led to the use of other types of waterproofing
systems. Through the newly created AQUAFIN®-IC ADMIX it has become possible to provide a waterproof concrete which is also easy to place and finish, by simply dosing the product directly into the concrete mixing truck.
This new admixture is based on the innovative crystalline technology found in AQUAFIN®-IC, which to date has been used to successfully waterproof several million square meters of concrete.

AQUAFIN®-IC ADMIX is not a hydrophobic additive, rather it waterproofs by filling the capillary pores of the concrete. The technology within AQUAFIN®-IC ADMIX reacts with moisture and free lime, creating millions of nanocrystals throughout the concrete matrix. This new development from SCHOMBURG is the world’s first liquid waterproofing admixture of its kind. The crystalline formation becomes a permanent, integral part of the concrete. This “self-sealing” effect is re-activated whenever water is present, thereby giving AQUAFIN®-IC ADMIX modified concrete the characteristic to seal tears and cracks of up to 0.4 mm. “Self-healing” concrete is hereby no longer an empty promise dreamed up in the marketing department, but an actual working product. A major advantage of AQUAFIN®-IC ADMIX is its easy application, as it has a very minimal effect on the concrete mix design. The product is added directly to the concrete, either at the batching plant or directly onsite into a readymix truck with full mixing capabilities. With most standard mix designs there is almost no change to the workability and setting-times of the concrete. In addition to waterproofing, AQUAFIN®-IC ADMIX significantly increases the compressive strength of the concrete through the crystals which form within the capillary voids, unlike hydrophobic admixtures which tend to affect it negatively. Ideal applications for AQUAFIN®-IC ADMIX are situations where water addition to the mix design cannot be reduced low enough or cannot be carefully controlled. Therefore it can be used for applications ranging from foundation walls of single family homes, to sealing water tanks, to lining tunnels where high negative side hydrostatic water pressure is present. AQUAFIN®-IC ADMIX is also approved for potable water applications. A new product will also shortly be available under the name BETOCRETE-C17 (BV) certified in accordance to DIN EN 934-2.

Munich: BAU 2007 What makes SCHOMBURG likeable? Many of our important visitors at our booth during the BAU 2007 told us: first of all our comprehensive line of high quality product, our vast understanding and knowledge of the construction and restoration market, highly knowledgeable and helpful technical support employees and all-in-all the complete marketing package that SCHOMBURG presents.
The new THERMOLUT® product line was the main attraction at our booth this year. Successfully so! The large display of the system attracted many new and current customers, eager to learn about this new technology. With the THERMOLUT® system we were able to quell the fears most people have about interior insulation and the usually critical dew point factor. The wood fiber insulation board THERMOLUT®-DP180 can absorb more than 20% by weight humidity, without losing the insulation characteristics. The loam plaster, an excellent heat absorber, along with the insulation board delivers moisture and humidity into the room during dry times of the year. Resulting in a very comfortable room atmosphere! Rooms insulated with the THERMOLUT® system generally maintain an air humidity of approximately 54%. Healthier living and breathing – thanks to THERMOLUT®! In the end: The BAU 2007 in Munich was worthwhile for all involved!

Highly Sulfate-Resistant Waterproof Coating For sealing surfaces which are both damp and rich in sulfates, a material is needed which is not only waterproof, but also one that can resist the high levels of sulfates. AQUAFIN®-SulfatFEST is suitable for waterproofing walls and floors in new and old construction, for both interior and exterior applications on substrates not prone to movement or cracking. In addition the product can be applied in situations where both positive and negative side hydrostatic pressure and standing water are present. Architects symposium & fair in Nepal In November 2006 an Architectural Symposium was organized by S.K. Shrestha, our local distributor in Katmandu. The interest was high, as 82 of the 90 invited architects attended. Albert-Johannes Schomburg gave a presentation featuring solutions for building restoration and waterproofing, followed by an interactive question and answer session. After the conclusion of the symposium, the “Interior Exterior Expo” trade show took place in Nepal. SCHOMBURG exhibited the AQUAFIN system approach for building construction. “A Time to Make Friends” with Berkemann Berkeman Building Materials, under the direction of Bernd Moosig in Detmold, hosted a world class viewing party on July 9th 2006 for the opening game of the 2006 Football World Cup. The theme of the party followed the World Cup slogan: “A Time to Make Friends!”

35 guests from AQUAFIN International GmbH representing 19 different countries and cultures were invited to enjoy the festivities. The energy of the World Cup was in the air and altogether over 250 guests indulged in the good spirits of Berkemann and the World Cup. Our Event-team members, Tanja Rose and Sonja Beckmann, surprised all of the guests, by raffling off a 1 week free rental of the AQUAFIN Smart Car. The winner, Werner Kleinschulte from the ZEB Paderborn, was completely surprised and elated by his good luck.

Inauguration of new production and warehousing facility in Slovakia When building permits were granted in July 2005, the construction of a new production and warehousing facility became a reality for the countries of the AQUAFIN-SOE Group (South-East Europe) on a green meadow in Bratislava (Slovakia).
On May 12, 2006 the facility was officially opened in the company of Albert Schomburg (President), Jitka Tietjen (Manager of South-East Europe) and approx. 100 other employees and guests. After 12 years of activity in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, a new era of SCHOMBURG in South-east Europe began with the inauguration of the new production and warehousing facility as well as its establishment in the local market. The facility consists of administrative offices (with sales and technical departments as well as a classroom), a warehousing area (with a capacity of 550 euro pallets) and a production plant (with an output capacity of 4.000 t / year). Official production with the new equipment began to January 1, 2007 with the three products AQUAFIN®-1K, UNIFIX® and THERMOPAL®-SR24.

Coating Systems with Structured Surface for Increased Slip Resistance INDUTEC GmbH developed two brand new coating systems with very easy application. Both surfaces provide a non-skid finish which is easy to clean, while maintaining the look and charm of a glossy surface. First Time Exhibiting at a Trade Show in Africa / Partnership Established in Guinea, Africa The “Foire International de Conarky,” the sole trade show in the country of Guinea, took place from February 23rd – March 16th, 2006 in Conakry with SCHOMBURG present as an exhibitor. This trade show experience was SCHOMBURG’s first step into the African marketplace. Prime Minister Cellu Dalein Diallo, along with the Minister for Trade and Industry and the Minister of Building and Development, welcomed SCHOMBURG as the first Germany company to exhibit at the show. During the show new business partners were found and relationships formed. Only two short months later a joint venture was established, together with Fatima and Madani Marega and Cheick Diallo, and SCHOMBURG products became available in the Guinean market. The German Approach to Market Extends Across the Borders Dr. Jens Hofele, Directing Manager of AQUAFIN International Holding, explained “the international marketplace is shifting its focus towards specialized industry distributors as the No. 1 market partner” to the foreign partners during the Annual Meeting held in December 2006, in Detmold, Germany. AQUAFIN International is the holding company within the SCHOMBURG Group which encompasses all of the international partnerships and activities of SCHOMBURG. The day-to-day business concept in Germany has begun to shape the international marketplace over the past few years with a heavy focus on specialized industry distributors as the No. 1 way to market. "The marketing activities are adapted to the requirements of the regional markets, but the basic concept remains constant: AQUAFIN, the name is the program," explains Hofele. The determination to adapt the concept internationally is the basis for its success. At the same time, INDUTEC GmbH’s focus on specialty/certified applicators in the street and track construction market will gain significance in the international arena. International Packaging Standardized In our industry the quality of a product depends heavily on the competence of the applicator and his ability to apply it properly. Surface preparation techniques and the varying effects of site conditions, such as sun exposure, temperature and rain, must be understood in all countries. In addition there are regional differences in regulations concerning the classification of hazardous materials. In order to communicate this important data in all languages the packaging layout for powder products in bags was redesigned last year. On the back of the packaging a pouch was integrated, where users can tear open a perforated seal and then have access to easily readable product data in 20 different languages. Jörg Riesenberg

New Efficient, Cementitious Protective Coating Developed after Nine Months of Research On the basis of the AQUAFIN technology SCHOMBURG’s research & development team created a new waterproof,
cement-bound protective coating, which can be applied in thin layers and is particularly abrasion resistant in outdoor applications. Notable advantages of the product include easy application, strong adhesion to concrete substrates with the use of a primer, UV stable and resistance to de-icing salts. AQUAFIN®-TC07 can be applied with a brush, trowel or suitable spray equipment. Main areas of application are water tanks, foundations, bridges and loading ramps. Testing is currently being conducted based on ASTM standards, and further testing for the European market is being discussed.

German-Guinean Business Forum in Hamburg and Detmold In November this year the DIHK-Hamburg (Association of German Chambers of Industry and Commerce) hosted a German-Guinean business forum. The Guinean delegation was represented by Kazaliou Balde, Minister for Economics and Medium-Size Industry, and Dr. Ousamane Sylla, Minister for Mining Industry, Mines and Natural Resources. During a visit by the delegates to Detmold, Cheick Diallo was able to make important contacts and actively promote the newly established SCHOMBURG Guinee S.A., Conakry. Christian Mischock

News About www.schomburg.de and Partner Companies In July 2006 the company INDUTEC GmbH was established as a part of the SCHOMBURG Group, along with a brand new website. Visitors can find complete product, news, and job information, useful downloads and much more in German and English at www.indutec.net. Likewise in March 2006 the re-designed website for RETHMEIER GmbH (www.rethmeier.de) was released. The new site features user friendly menus and an integrated search engine with key word function providing a fast and purposeful way to the desired information. www.rethmeier.de is viewable in German and English. As a result of increased relationships and activity in North and West Africa, the SCHOMBURG website was made available in the French language in November 2006. This was an important step in providing the new clientele with appropriate market information in their native language. Beyond that two other features were optimized. A "keyword search" feature was added, which allows visitors to search the site using various key words to find the suitable product and system that fit their needs quicker and more efficiently.
The "Project References" section was also rearranged to provide more user friendly interaction. Now users can select up to five selection fields when searching for possible references. A new “printer friendly” option creates a one page printout which includes all information pertaining to a reference on a single page, including a picture. AQUAFIN, Inc waterproofs the Elizabeth, New Jersey, Department of Public Works Building with AQUAFIN®-IC ADMIX In July 2006, the Elizabeth NJ Department of Public Works began construction on a new facility to house their vehicles and staff. The facility consists of an area for office space, garaged vehicle maintenance and salt storage.
To waterproof the on grade slabs and salt dome, they chose to use a crystalline admixture which would integrally waterproof the slab, as well as enhance the physical properties of the slab. AQUAFIN®-IC ADMIX, the chosen product, was added to more than 1,500 cubic yards of concrete directly at the concrete plant, during the batching process. Laborers poured the material in weather ranging from 85°F to over 105°F during a summer heat wave. The material performed well and the construction is nearing completion. The use of AQUAFIN®-IC ADMIX significantly cut down on time and labor, creating cost savings for the contractor installing the material, as well as the owner of the building. New Universal Polymer-Modified Leveling Mortar SCHOMBURG GmbH’s mortar program was extended by the addition of SOLOCRET-15, a universal surface leveling mortar. Before an uneven substrate can be covered with tiles or other top coatings, a smooth, level surface must be achieved. With SOLOCRET-15, applicators have a new leveling mortar that can be applied to wall, floors and ceilings. It is a polymer-modified, fast-setting, mortar for leveling surfaces in thicknesses of 2 - 15 mm in a single lift. Tiles and other top coatings can be applied approximately
4 hours after the application of SOLOCRET-15. This results in shorter waiting periods and lower costs for the user. The product has great potential due to its easy application and broad range of uses. Holger Sass
Newly Developed Breathable Epoxy Floor Coating The new coating from SCHOMBURG is supplemented by the water vapor-open IB coatings. INDUFLOOR®-IB 3370 and INDUFLOOR®-IB 3375 are based on an epoxy resin dispersion, and are self leveling with a minimum layer thickness of 2 mm. The product can be applied to any concrete floor slab where moisture vapor transmission is too high for typical non-breathable floor coatings. When a conductive flooring system is required, INDUFLOOR®-IB 3375 can be installed. After application both coatings are topped with a water-based, acrylic-polyurethane sealer (INDUFLOOR IB 2250), which dries to a transparent, matt finish in order to keep contamination away from the coating surface. 10 Years SCHOMBURG in Russia In October 2006, the Russian subsidiary of the SCHOMBURG group, SCHOMBURG-ER Ltd., celebrated its 10 Year Anniversary with founders Albert Schomburg and René Karolyi. In their speech Albert Schomburg and René
Karolyi thanked the employees for their hard work and dedication to the company, which made it possible to reach this milestone. Additionally the financial reports for the first three quarters of 2006 were announced. The expansion of the SSB-CCC Production-Partnership is planned for the coming year. This is a system of production which allows foreign subsidiaries to produce powder products using local raw materials, while still guaranteeing the same quality as the products produced in Detmold, Germany. This creates major cost saving by reduced freight and customs charges. The first SSB-CCC System has been in place since the middle of September 2006 at a plant in Metrobeton, St. Petersburg. Additionally intentions are focused on increased activity in the industrial centers of the Russian Federation through the addition of technical sales representatives and partners.

Reinforcement of the Technical Support Department During Summer 2006, the product management team was joined by two new employees to support the international partnerships, Sok Leang Gouy and Abdel Mouhsine Elkhaouda. Both are civil engineers and already well into the groove with everyday activities here in the office. Sok Leang Guoy primarily supports our English-language regions and Abdel Mouhsine Elkhaouda is responsible for the French-language regions; for example Northern Africa, where he will also have his first long term international mission. Sometimes the tough jobs are the most interesting A marode grain silo plant in Rimavska Sobota, Slowakei, was in dire need of repair as the basement had quite a few areas where water had found its way to the inside. The main requirement was a dry storage area for the grain, however the picture we found in the basement reminded us more of a swamp… And as it turned out, not just by coincidence, because approximately 30 years ago the land upon which the silos were built was a swamp, filled in with gravel and other materials in order to build grain silos. On top of the nearly 6 meter thick foundation slab concrete walls up to 85 cm thick were placed. In order to keep the water leakage to a minimum during construction large pumps with an output capacity of 42,000 L/h were used to lower the ground-water level to 2.5 m. In the past three years, water increasingly leaked into the building to the point where some lower portions had up to 2 m of standing water. When the freezing weather moved in an ice skating rink materialized. Since a large portion of the surrounding land contained a buried concrete slab, waterproofing the building for the outside was not an option. The solution for the water problem would have to be addressed from the inside. In order to achieve the targeted “Dry Situation”, a new strategy and though process was used to find the proper combination of products with specialized characteristics. The Solution: • First the inflow of water must be temporarily prevented, and ports inserted around the perimeter for the injection of AQUAFIN®-P1. • Next, a deep cove is to be cut out of the wall/slab joint with hydro-demolition in order to install AQUAFIN®-CJ hoses directly in the joint. • The hoses are placed in the joint and the cove is filled with ASOCRET repair mortar, enclosing the hoses directly within the wall. • AQUAFIN®-P4 is injected into the AQUAFIN®-CJ hoses, completely stopping the infiltration of water. • Finally the walls and floors are to be coated with the non-breathable ASODUR®-SG2-Thix coating in order to resist the negative side water pressure. And as the devil is in the detail, many further little things had to be clarified. In 2006 the renovations were started and the plan went into action. The technical reps from Slovakia, Matus Hejtmánek and Lubomir Fajta were able to demonstrate their vast theoretical and practical knowledge. In the end all parties involved were happy with the end result, and further silos are already in line for similar restoration. Façade Impregnator: clean, fast working and lasting ASOLIN-SFC45 is the newest addition to the Building Repair Materials product line from SCHOMBURG. It is a ready-to-use siloxane based cream façade impregnator.
With its excellent workability the cream is easily applied to a substrate with a brush, roller, trowel, or suitable spraying equipment. The product has an almost loss free application and offers many advantages such as: UV stable, resistance to de-icing salts and frost, water vapor open (“breathable”), optimum surface penetration, and water resistant. The product can be applied to many substrates such as brick, natural stone, lime stone, concrete and more, in order to protect against the damaging influences of the weather. Holger Sass

1st all English Technical Documentation Handbook 440 Pages of Important Information Annual Meeting of the International Partners in December 2006, the managing directors of all foreign partnerships gathered in Detmold. During the meetings the 1st Edition of the English-language AQI book was introduced. The book begins with an overview and history about the SCHOMBURG Group. The main content includes product datasheets, brochures and other relevant information covering products sold internationally. Additionally, the book includes a chapter detailing proper surface preparation methods and techniques for the application of SCHOMBURG products. Use of INDUTEC Systems with the German Federal Armed Forces in Afghanistan During the course of the German Federal Armed Forces occupation in Afghanistan, the city Marze e Sharif was selected as the location for the troops. Aside from military facilities, the base provides accommodations, ample food supplies as well as its own hospital complex. Due to a very small window of time, only one modular building was set-up. Coating the slabs of this building was done under extreme situations to approximately 3,000 m2 for the large scale kitchen and cafeteria areas. The products used in this project were INDUFLOOR®-IB 3385, INDUFLOOR®-IB 3351 as well as ASOFLEX-AKB. Mario Lamm

Small Specialties – Big Advantages The New Superplasticizer from RETHMEIER the non-desired flat crystals (initially retarding effect) until the needle-shaped crystals are strong enough to form completely and entirely the concrete matrix. This effect produces an effective working time and pumpability of up to 120 minutes, even under bad temperature conditions (concrete and air 35° – 40 °C). The development of the resistance is spectacular as well: on the Canary Islands we mix a concrete with 300 kg CEM II/A-P 42,5 R which gets to 32 N/mm2. With 320 kg CEM we reach 40 N/mm2. Even with a CEM IV/B 32,5 N we get up to 38 N/mm2. The initial resistance of the concrete will not be influenced negatively by the retarding properties of DURORETARD V. 3.01: here we are around 16-18 N/mm2 after 3 days.

Current superplasticizers for concrete – independent of the generation and raw material base – work mainly by the mechanisms "dispersion" or "steric repulsement", whereby the latter one is under discussion, because it can only hardly be prooved – or not at all. All current superplasticizers show good results with portland cement, but have severe problems with cements which tend to build up rapidly (about 10 minutes after addition of water) big flat crystals – e.g. feldspars. These problematic cements are a.o. the puzzolanic ones (CEM II/A-P or B-P and CEM IV), but also blast furnace cements. According to the chemical composition of the added natural pozzolan, the disperging effect of the superplasticizer breaks down after a short time (about 30 min.) and the concrete begins to harden. Furthermore, it seems that the big flat crystals hinder the latter (from 90 minutes) development of the small needleshaped crystals (C2S und C3S) which really form the concrete matrix. This effect is responsable for strength at 28 days, lower than planned and achieved with portland cement. DURORETARD V. 3.01 is a brand new development which can do with these problems: it brakes the development of
The economic aspect of DURORETARD V. 3.01 is a hit: the material cost for the concrete manufacturer is about 4,20 €/m3 concrete; on the other side he can save about 40 kgs cement (on the Canaries: 3,30 €) and the plasticizer used so long (1,75 €). This sums up to a reduction of 0,85 €/m3 for a C 25/30. The savings are as higher as more exigent is the concrete. Here comes an extreme example: a big Spanish contractor is working with a PCE of a competitor in the case of the runways of the new La Palma airport. Just to get a C 35/45 with our current cement CEM II/A-P 42,5 R, they "bury" 10,50 €/m3 concrete for the admixture and work with 395 kg €/m3 cement. At this site the potential savings could be 6,00 €/m3 concrete or more. But it´s a public work and we are “only” talking about 160,000 m3 concrete. As DURORETARD V. 3.01 has been developed especially for pozzolanic cements, there may occur longer retarding times in use with portland cement. This effect enhances on the other hand the resistance at 28 days – by the prolonged and complete hydration of the cement. Our so-far experiences show that the dosage can be reduced to 50 % in the case of portland cement - and then we are talking of 2,10 €/m3 concrete (this example refers to CEM I 52,5 R for precast units). It has become tradition that all of the proud parents were honored with a gift from the company. Just by coincidence, SCHOMBURG celebrate 40 Years of AQUAFIN, at the same time as West German Broadcast (WDR) Network celebrated its Golden Anniversary.

The University of Applied Sciences in Detmold, as culture partner of the WDR, undertook the task of creating an exhibition for the anniversary celebration with a cultural theme. We gladly supported the University with their task. From the imaginations of 2 architecture students, Mariola Garthof and Helene Penner, came the 50 red flags which fluttered in the breeze over Detmold for four months. This unique experience was enjoyed by all, not just the "Schomburgers."
But they did not just blow one summer... the 50 SCHOMBURG flags were again displayed in the training facility for further enjoyment.
And because we “Lipper’s” don’t let anything die, we recreated the scene in our training facility…
