For sizes larger than 50 × 50 cm, the back of the tiles or boards should be coated with a contact layer; the break-out should always be checked. If this contact coat is not adequate to fully cover the rear of the tile, then use the floating buttering method. By achieving sufficient bonding between the laying material and the substrate, any stresses that occur can be absorbed evenly. Deformable or, even better, highly deformable adhesives are able to relieve stresses that occur. The specific properties of tiles and boards must be taken into account.
