Reinforced concrete elements in areas close to traffic are subjected to heavy stress from de-icing salts in splash and seepage zones. In addition, elements in such environments face an increased risk of carbonation. To provide long-term protection for these surfaces, mineral waterproofing slurries with OS5b certification in accordance with DIN EN 1504‑2 are used. AQUAFIN®‑OS meets these requirements and offers reliable protection against harmful environmental influences.

RELIABLE PROTECTION AGAINST CONCRETE CORROSION
AQUAFIN-OS provides proven protection against chloride, carbonation and damage caused by de-icing salts. When used as a waterproofing treatment, it prevents water ingress and the penetration of substances that damage concrete. AQUAFIN-OS extends the service life of the concrete structure.

In reinforced concrete structures, the concrete absorbs compressive forces, whilst the reinforcing steel is responsible for withstanding tensile stresses.
The rust products that form on the reinforcing steel increase in volume, leading to cracks, spalling and ultimately to the failure of the concrete cover.
To ensure that the steel remains permanently protected, sufficient concrete cover and the natural alkalinity of the concrete are crucial. As long as the pH value of the concrete is sufficiently high, the steel remains in a passive state and is protected against corrosion.
Effective surface protection against water and ingress of O2, CO2 and chlorides is, therefore, crucial to prevent corrosion, extend the service life of the structure and avoid costly repairs.
CO2 introduced via water and moisture leads to carbonation processes and a drop in pH value. If the pH value falls below a critical threshold, the steel loses its protective passivation. If oxygen then reaches the reinforcing steel via moisture transport, oxidation processes can begin. The situation becomes particularly critical when chloride ions (XD, XS) are present: they significantly accelerate corrosion.

Mechanical (XM) and chemical exposure (XA) can damage the concrete cover. Similarly, freeze-thaw cycles (XF) can have an effect, particularly in combination with de-icing agents.

Concrete protection in underground car parks and paved multi-storey car parks In multi-storey car parks, concrete structures are subjected to severe stress from de-icing salts during the winter months. In the plinth areas, there is spray damage, whilst in the floor areas, water containing chlorides runs off.
The DBV guidance note on multi- storey car parks and underground car parks offers an alternatve to a certified surface protection system in accordance with OS5b. It describes waterproofing in accordance with DIN 18533 for water-permeable road surfaces.
In the case of paved car parks, the chlorides seep into the subsoil, run off the foundations or accumulate there. OS5b surface protection coatings can protect these areas against the ingress of chlorides and also against CO2 ingress.
